We also have a lot of info on Cannabis apps, cannabis app and other medical marijuana related I phone apps.

However, the laid-back bunch at the California-based consumer electronics giant apparently saw nothing out of ordinary in a marijuana app. Simply dubbed Cannabis, it discovers nearby cannabis-related institutions and organizations in your state, even providing handy links to legal coffee shops abroad.

Say you’re bored to death in a new city and you want to get stoned. No problem, just load Cannabis on your iPhone and get locations to the nearest - well, not drug dealers but pharmaceutical stores. I thought there would never come a day when I’d be reviewing a pot-related iPhone
app, but I’m obviously wrong about that.

The $2.99 program (App Store link) is rated 12+ because it breaks no law.

Cannabis simply discovers nearby stores that legally carry marijuana supplies for medical purposes, and only in U.S. states where marijuana is legalized. The program will also find locations to other cannabis-related institutions, like clinics, attorneys, cooperatives, etc. You can search by city and ZIP code, bookmark listings, add bookmarks to contacts, etc.

Ajnag, the developer behind this app, plans to add marijuana-related news, videos, and reviews in future updates. Let’s be clear, this app won’t help you get even the smallest cannabis supply unless you can produce a medical prescription from your doctor. Nevertheless, it’s still very unlike Apple, the company known for the infamous App Store screening process, to even consider, let alone approve, such an app. Here’s how the developer describes the app:

“Looking for your cannabis medicine? Need to find a doctor? Have legal issues? Cannabis Apps has cultivated an iPhone application that allows you to quickly locate the nearest medical cannabis collectives, cooperatives, doctors, clinics, attorneys, organizations, and other patient services in states that have passed medical marijuana legislation. Information is continuously updated and supplied by iMedicalCannabis.org, Ajnag.com, and the Patient ID Center.

Cannabis for iPhone: screenshot 001Apple’s approval policies never cease to amaze me. The company went from rejecting just about every app that didn’t met Apple’s stringent criteria to saying that iPhone farts are OK, but boobs are not to allowing and then withdrawing sexually explicit apps from the store. All along the way, Apple has been making headline-making missteps, like the Baby Shaker, Nine Inch Nails, and promo code scandals.

Taking all of this into account, Apple’s decision to approve Cannabis is a head over heels moment that had me scratching my head hard. From a legal point of view, the app breaks no law. Still, it’s remarkable the subtle pro-marijuana notions beyond medical purposes escaped scrutiny of Apple’s censors. For instance, if you’re using the app in a state with no marijuana laws, it’ll forward you to the nearest cannabis organizations instead so you can “get active and take action towards reform.”

And if you happen to travel abroad, say Netherlands, the app will locate the nearest cannabis coffee shop where you can legally get stoned. The developer even dubbed Cannabis a “hand travel companion in regions that have decriminalized marijuana.” Cannabis app | Cannabis Apps | Weed Apps | I pot | I Spliff | I phone apps | I phone Applications | Medical Marijuana
